Frank’s chest is 31”, his neck is 19”, and the base of his neck is 20”.

I followed the pattern for size L except I knit the back neck shaping 8” long per size XL and knit the underside neck shaping 9” long because Frank has a barrel chest.

For the back neck shaping I decreased every 12th row per size XL (8” long). For the front neck shaping I decreased per size L then worked even until the shaping measured 9” long.

I should have knit the underside piece a couple of inches shorter before the neck shaping. I didn’t re-knit it because of the buttonhole/button placement situation.

I worked YO buttonholes instead of bound off buttonholes: k1, p1, k2tog, yo, work to last 4 sts, yo, k2tog, p1, k1.

Instead of knitting the neckband separately and sewing it to the sweater I knit everything in one piece. I put the front and back sts on scrap yarn instead of binding off.

For the neckband I cast on 6 sts, worked across 5 cast on sts, k2tog with first st from back, worked to last back st, k2tog with first st from front, worked to end (82 sts). I worked the neckband buttonhole on row 6: work to last 5 sts, p2tog, yo, p1, k1, p1.

I used seven stashed 7/8” buttons from lotsofbuttons.com.
