This hat can be worn further back on the head for more slouch (see second and third photo) or more on the forehead for less slouch (see first photo)
This pattern was SO wonderful, I thought I’d knit another. Plus, I had a lovely array of neutral Shepherd’s Wool (one of my favorite top three yarns ever) that I didn’t want to just sit in my stash.
Yarn Usage/yardage
Unfortunately, I didn’t weigh the original (partial) skeins of yarn before I started this hat, so I can’t be exactly sure how much of each color I used. Of course, I didnt use even close to a whole skein of each color. And, of course modifying the striping sequence to suit your yarn supply is fairly easy. The big Pom pom (made in the pewter) did use quite a lot of yarn, because I wanted it to be very full looking.
Modifications
Like my previous Dustland Hat, I followed shannonruthie ‘s mod’s exactly for three reasons:
- To make the slouch more subtle
- To use less yarn
- I’m a loose knitter, so I used size 6 needles throughout the entire project
** For the small, the first round of decreases is as follows:
k10, k2tog, repeat to end of round, 8 times total (88 stitches)
For the striping, I switched colors every time I knit the two garter bumps between sections.
8/24/14--All done! The only thing I have left to do is add the light grey pom-pom. :)
10/14/14--I finished it and I really wanted to love it, but really, there was way too much slouch. I ripped back to the end of my (shortened) section 4 (section 4 is the diagonal pattern in pewter yarn).
From here, I’ll begin the crown decreases with the brown yarn. (all in all, I removed two stripes).
10/15/14--After removing a stripe, I love it so much more. I made a light grey pom-pom, but I think I’m going to make a larger one instead (more like 2” diameter should be more proportionate). Yay! Now for some cooler weather so I can wear it outside :)
