I worked 10 rounds of the Firework Surprise pattern for the front of the mat, a plain dc square for the back, and sandwiched them together with two layers of felt inside.

I used a row of sc to join the edges together, squashed the whole thing flat by lightly steam ironing, and did a little ‘quilting’ with fine thread to keep all the layers in place.

LOVE this afghan square pattern, very easy to work once I read the instructions for the elongated stitch properly ;) I’ll definitely use it again.
