Finished. The second mitt took half the time and is much more even, as expected. The pair aren’t exactly the same size, but I still like them! I blocked over tapered drinking glasses to make the cuffs wider, as they were bunching up due to being a little snug on my wrists. Now they’re very comfortable.

I’m not sure why I picked two fingering weight yarns - I must have been in a daze, though I did get gauge with size 7 needles. The fabric is light, but Auckland doesn’t get very cold anyway! And I know, you’re not supposed to use colours with very similar value for designs like this, but I like the subtle shifting as the blue-green gets lighter and then darkens almost to match the grey :)

I still feel only 90% confident working with two yarns, so I’ll probably make another small Fair Isle project like a hat or scarf before I jump into a sweater.

One mitt done!

This is my first attempt at Fair Isle colourwork, and I spent most of the project switching yarn holds and hands every row or two, trying to find something comfortable, and feeling like I was struggling for every stitch. In the last 4 or 5 rows I finally found a setup that seems to work for me, so fingers crossed for a smoother second mitt - it’s OK though, I’m happy to persevere to learn a new skill!

I accidentally made the afterthought thumb opening too wide (12 stitches instead of 8), but I just decreased 4 times once I picked up the stitches again and it’s fine.
