96g of yarn after caking.

13 Dec
Used the long-tail cast on, as directed in the pattern. I’ve never used it for socks and was worried it would be too tight so I did it over two needles. Seems like it will be just fine. I did have some excessive yarn left in the tail but better too much than not enough, right?

Both socks legs are complete. I was a bit concerned with how this would go because I’m not always a huge fan of cables, but I’m really enjoying this. The repeat is pretty easy to memorize and nice to work. This is very engaging knitting.

To begin toe at 17cm.

22 Dec
Cold weather has made my hands ache horribly and drastically slowed me down. But I finally got the first toe done! I unzipped the heel and tried it on… the whole toe is past my foot. 7cm is not enough, at least not at my gauge. The sock is currently 5cm too long.

So, the plan! Knit both heels (trying taat with my Chiaogoo interchangeables to hopefully combat a little hand pain), then try the socks on to figure out exactly how far I need to frog the toes. Then redo toe one and do toe two. I had hoped to have these finished by now but looks like I have lots more knitting ahead!

I did contemplate snipping the already completed toe, frogging the toe and grafting the toe to the shorter foot but a color change will prevent that. Dang it!

25 Dec
Finished the heels. I changed from DPNs to TAAT and my gauge changed. Now the heels are too shallow. The sock pulls across the top. So sad!

To wear these socks, I’ll need to redo the heels (and make them deeper), rip back the feet, and redo the toes. I’m not sure if I have that in me! sob

On the plus side, the socks are very neat looking and aren’t hard to get on at all - the pattern makes for a stiffer material but the ribbing on the sides does a great job of making the socks more forgiving so the slid on with no problems. Also, the heel/toe pattern is so neat!
