Notes

Photos are in reverse order, starting with finished photos and ending with my first work in progress photos. From the bottom photos upwards, I start by showing my mistake (difference between using a 5mm hook and a 3.5mm hook) these are the first two photos. All the rest are using the smaller hook.

This pattern is based on Dada’s Place Daisy Granny Square Pillow, she shared a post about making this pillow here. She based this on the daisy granny squares pattern which is here by Colour n Cream.

I also purchased the following pattern from Dada’s Place here called Flowery Cushion Cover which told me how she put the granny squares together and turned it into a cushion cover.

I loved how Dada’s Place did the Daisy Granny Square Cushion Cover so I based mine on this as well, choosing similar colours and following the same design that she did. I did contact her for some advice so I could achieve the same results as she did, she told me she followed the pattern from Color n Cream apart from the centre of the daisy she did Double Crochet Stitches instead.

So I followed the pattern on Colour n Cream (which is why I selected this as the main pattern) with that adjustment to make the granny squares. I knew from Dada’s Place blog post how many squares I needed. As I had never made a cushion cover before I purchased her cushion cover pattern, it was using differently designed granny squares but everything else was the same. So once I had done the daisy granny squares I followed the instructions from this pattern.

I hope the above makes sense but any questions please ask me.

Important! I made one big mistake along the way which set me back time wise, as well as wasting yarn. I followed the granny square pattern from Colour n Cream and for hers she used a 5mm hook so this is what I did. I only realised after making all the granny squares that they were way to big for the project I had set out to do. I had wondered if something was wrong as my squares weren’t looking like hers as they looked more holey but as nothing had been mentioned about using another hook size I didn’t realise till the end. I then went and checked the PDF Pattern I had bought from Dada’s Place and for her granny squares she used a 3.5mm. As soon as I re-did the granny squares using this size hook it started to look like the one in the original post (Daisy Granny Square Pillow) and it was the correct size when all the squares were put together.

As I can only crochet and I do not have a sewing machine I have done the front cushion cover and I will be paying for a local lady to finish it off for me, by adding the backing to make it into a cushion cover.

I finished my part, the crochet front cushion cover on the 12th of March. I am now awaiting to get the second part done so it becomes a complete cushion cover.

How much yarn did I use

I am afraid the section on yarn usage wont be as exact as I would like, due to the big mistake I made. As what I choose to do was to use the left over yarn I had first and then if needed I would undo my previous work. I will try and be as accurate as I can when adding how much yarn I used, but if you choose to make this please allow for some further leeway.

I would say that I have been fairly accurate on the white yarn, on the chart I’ve added just under 6 50g balls of white. If anything its slightly less than this so I would estimate you would need to buy 5-6 equivalent balls of white yarn to be on the safe side.

As you can see all the coloured yarn is for the granny squares and I have estimated them all to be under 50g. As you generally can’t buy smaller than 50g balls you can buy these knowing you’ll have enough to complete this project, as this is the area that was harder to be more accurate with but I’ve done my best.

I estimated I used 20g of the yellow for the circles and the rest was on the outer granny squares. I would of ideally liked more yellow so I would suggest thinking about getting an extra 50g ball, however you might be fine because my 50g ball did this cushion cover and it did 14 flower centres of the bigger mistake granny squares. I just wasn’t willing to undo all that work just for the yellow in the middle. I hope this guide on yarn amounts help.

How long did it take?

Please don’t take the start and finish date as a guide to how long you’ll need to make this. I had to do this project along side others so it did take me much longer that way. Its not usually the way I prefer to work but I had some projects I had to make urgently (e.g other gifts). I would say depending on how long you can crochet each day/week you should be able to achieve this within a month normally.

Would I make this again?

Now I am clearer on what I am doing the answer would be yes and I have learnt a lot from making my first ever cushion cover. I can highly recommend buying the PDF Pattern for the Flowery Cushion Cover from Dada’s Place as its well done and clear to follow. I will be using this as a guide for all future cushion covers like this one.

One of the main things I learnt when doing this was that the yarn I used for this project wasn’t the best option. I choose what I did not only because I liked using this yarn but it was a similar one as asked for in the Color n Cream Pattern. Now I have learnt more about doing a cushion cover like Dada’s place I would now happily buy a DK yarn to use or even a 4ply.

The very main thing I have learnt when it comes to yarn choice with a project like this is NOT to use an unstable yarn, Drops Paris as nice as it is it is a splitty yarn. I found not only did it make doing this pattern harder but I do feel it influcenced the look as well. So next time I will be choosing a smoother more stable yarn and I have a few in mind, I hope to try doing a cushion cover based on what I have learnt in the next few months :-).

I can only crochet, I can’t sew so I paid a local lady to add the fabric backing for me. It looks so much better now it’s finished and I’m hoping my friend will love her gift.

The finished date is the date it was completed with fabric backing, I finished the crochet part a few weeks before this date. I took a long time doing this, partly due to bad health and also having to do other projects along side this. I’m delighted its finished now and its off to my friend now.
