Notes

I am making this Dragonfly as part of a Bug Baby Mobile, the mobile will have 6 different creatures hanging from it with a flower in the centre. All patterns used for this baby mobile come from the same designer, Animation.

I decided to start with the Dragonfly as I’ve made this pattern before as a tester, and it’s such a lovely pattern I couldn’t resist. I didn’t end up going with any of the yarns I tested previously and in the end went to my favourite three bears yarn <3. I am using their DK cotton rather than the Aran I usually do as I felt it was best for this project. This time different colours too as I checked out some photos of these real life creatures and decided a blue one would be perfect!

Pattern Notes

I started off this pattern using a 3mm hook, as from all my testing this seemed to be the best size hook for the best looking results. I hadn’t used this yarn before though so I actually found out a bit later on than 3mm really wasn’t suitable. The pattern starts with all the parts and then goes onto the body, and it wasn’t until I did the body that it was clear a 3mm hook wasn’t right. I adjusted the hook size for the body, down to a 2.5mm hook and this was much better grin. After I finished the body I then needed to re-do all the parts I had made using the bigger hook but it really was worth it. In fact it meant I ended up having enough Pale Sky yarn to finish the wings, as when made with 3mm hook I was a few rounds short of completing the last small wing. So in a way I did half this pattern again which took me longer of course but as I said worth it. 2.5mm hook was a much better match for this yarn and amigurumi back loop style.

Other than this it went really well and I am so happy with the results. I used 12mm solid black eyes for the eyes and a little stuffing in the eyes as per pattern. The body is stuffed as well and for this I did my usual of using tights I had cut down. This keeps the stuffing secure (perfect if making for babies) as well as giving a neat looking finish.

When it came to sewing I did make one slight change, as I was struggling to get the finish I wanted to the wings. I found it easier to sew the wings together and then sew into place and I would suggest doing whatever you find easier, for me it was doing this.

Well that’s all my notes on making this pattern, it really is easy to make and you get a lovely finish too. I would suggest if you are making one and you are unsure what hook size is right for your yarn to start with the body. This way you can make sure it looks right and you are using the right hook size before making all the other body parts. It’s not often as noticeable when making the body parts whichis why I didn’t know until I was doing the body. I hope this helps!

Sizing

In regards to size I found that I got different results to the designer even though I followed her pattern in the same style. I used a DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook and the length of my Dragonfly was 5.5 inches approx. This is bigger than the designers even though she used the same weight yarn and a bigger hook so no idea what happened there.

At the end of the day you need to make sure you have a tight stitch for amigurumi so if you are worried about size then you may need to adjust the thickness of yarn you use as if you try to use a bigger hook with a yarn that needs a smaller one you’ll just end up with a really gappy amigurumi which you do not want. I hope this helps :-) and I will add all yarns vary as I learnt from my tester Dragonfly so it could even be different DK yarns result in different finished sizes or the hook size needed.

Yarn Amounts

Please bare in mind I have based these amounts on brand new balls of yarn that are 50g. I did not weigh them beforehand as I hadn’t used them yet but I have found before that they can end up being a bit more than 50g.

I am wondering if this happened in this case as you’ll see from my yarn amounts used I needed the same amount of both blues to make this Dragonfly and I would of thought the wings would of used less than the body and legs. So if you are making this make sure you have some extra yarn for leeway.
