Notes

#8 needles made a fabric that looked a bit too loose, I’ll use #7 Knit Picks interchangeables

I’m casting on with long tail method (recommended in pattern) - following TECHknitter’s instructions and CO over 2 needles

Pro tip: when knitting it help to actually read the pattern.
I got throught the 8 rows of garter stitch and THEN noticed I was supposed to slip the first stitch of every row. On the plus side, I discovered the cast-on looks a bit sloppy and I’m afraid the #7 needles are still too big.

I’ll try again with #6 needles and CO with #8 needles instead of 2 needles.

The CO looks great and the fabric with the #6 needles looks perfect! I’ve gotten through the first repeat of the pattern though and the more I look at it, the more I want to add beads to the top of the Tardis eyelets to simulate the light on top of the police box….I’m going to see what sort of clear/silver light catching beads I have on hand and experiment with the placement of beads using the crochet hook method I learned from the Aquitane cuffs. Once I find a configuration I like, I think a trip to Shipwreck beads is in order!

I found some beads that work perfectly, and I even have more than enough for the cowl! They’re clear with silver lining, round, and on the big side (for seed beads).

Here’s the placement that looks the best:
On Row 2 k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p1, k3, place bead on 3rd st, k2, p2
On Row 10 k3, place bead on 3rd st, k2, p1, (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2

I also placed beads on every 9th stitch into the pattern for the first garter row at the end.

I initially tried to use EZ’s sewn bind off because it’s supposed to match the long-tail CO, but I didn’t like how it looked so I painstakingly ripped it out. I knitted an extra row because the row with beads made it look shorter than the bottom edge. I then started to BO loosely knit-style. Unfortunately I had already cut the yarn for the sewn BO and I ran out of yarn part way through the BO. I ripped back and held the yarn double on the final row for about 8 stitches then finished with the strand from the ball. I left the tails long and will probably use those to sew on the buttons.

I will need 4 buttons and will place one between each pair of TARDISes on the edge - that should correspond to the lace section of the other end.

I just sort of winged it on the button placement…

It’s a tight fit, but it’s stretchy enough that I can button it first and then pull it over my head. Decent undercowl material.
