The colors were chosen based on the availability at the lys. Adequate shades of blue were available. Since blue is one step from purple on the color wheel, I chose a yellow-green to be one step from blue-green aqua. I hope it works. 6

I like the visual impact of the afghan, however, the directions are not precise. After a week or so of experimentation this is my plan.
-
The way this afghan has to be made depends upon the size of the 1/4 square blocks. If these are made to be square and of uniform size, the central 5 squares will be made later to equal the size of the 4 small blocks when stitched together.
-
Experimentation is needed to create the 1/4 square blocks to be square rather than long and pointed or fan out and too wide.
-
My solution is is this: increase by 1 or 2 stitches alternating per row. You may need to adjust according to your stitches.
-
Row 1, center full square: 3 stitches per side (not counting corner chain)
-
Row 2, right side facing, new color, 2 sides only: 5 stitches per side, 3 ch corner
-
Row 3, new color, wrong side facing: 6 stitches per side
-
Row 4, same color, turn, right side facing: 8 stitches (short stitch height, “1.5 rows” )
-
Row 5, new color, wrong side facing: 9 stitches (back to tall stitch height)
-
Row 6, same color, turn, right side facing: 11 stitches
-
Row 7, new color, right side facing: 12 stitches
-
Row 8, same color, turn, wrong side facing: 14 stitches
-
Row 9, same color, turn, right side facing: 15 stitches
The huge blocks will be worked out when I get there.

The alternating 1 or 2 stitch increases is working. I have done the blocks in assembly line fashion.
In order to make the central square portion the following is needed:
48 quarter squares, 28 of which will be dark at the center, 20 will be light at the center, made according to previous plan. 1 Center and 4 Side Squares. 8 more quarter squares will be light center but will be the large fill in the space squares.
8/21/17
Have worked out the details of the center, side and fill in squares.
Center Square: 1row white, 1 row contrast, 1.5 rows light, 2 rows bright, and 4.5 rows dark.
Side Square: 1 row white, 1 row contrast, 4 rows dark, 2.5 rows bright, and 1.5 rows light.
Fill In Square: 1 row white, 1 row contrast, 2.5 rows light, 4 rows bright, and 9.5 rows dark. Used the alternating 2 or 2 stitch increases.
Also, I have sewn together the three different squares made up of the small blocks
8/26/17
All blocks finished. Now time to sew it all together.
9-9-17
Center dimension 50.5 in. square.
Added an extra row small squares to opposite ends. See photo.
On the corners extended from the white center a mirror of the square similar to a butterfly shape, outlined with dark. Then filled in with stripes of colors. Left some of the corners protruding for interest.
