This is what 170.240 stitches look like.
FO size (after machine washing)

Inspired by this project: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/hhill12/spirit-otter-chart
I chose two aquatic, two terrestrial and two air animals. I added a border, using the design of the paw that appears in the wolf and the bear chart (inverting it to make a “walking trail”; pictures of the chart in the project). I also inverted some of the animals (bear and falcon), so they would face the animal opposite to them. That all added up to 224 st (that will become 448 while doubleknitting) and 380 rw.

Gave up on the Fabel Unicolour, it’s taking too long to arrive. I’d rather rely on my LYS.
The Dralon 4 is the same weight, it’s produced in Portugal, and I can get 100 grs hanks. The deal is sealed!
Doing the panels separately and sewing them together at the end. So I can carry the work with me when commuting to/from work.

It’s tricky to cast on with two colours. I had to keep the exact order of the yarns (white above, red underneath) to get a regular stitch, with always the same colour facing up or down.

1/3 of beaver done. This is going to be a HUGE blanket.

Almost 2/3 of the beaver done. Can’t wait to see the result!

Beaver is done. Did not bind off, since it would make for a bulky and very strange seam to attach it to the next panel. Instead I’ve put the stitches on two pieces of scrap yarn and I’m hoping that I’ll manage to somehow stitch it to the panel on top. Kitchner stitch, here I go (in some months from now, of course).
Orca already cast on.

Orca done. That means that 1/3 of the blanket is done.
I decided that I won’t graft the panels together. Because the border has a two colour pattern and because by grafting it I would be adding a row in the midle of a design. So I’ll just knit two huge stripes and sew them together. The beaver is already on the needles again.
Next panel: the bear.

Bear is finished, so on to the hawk. This means that half of the project is done. Oh god, three more months to go. M., the baby, was already born, in January (one month early).

Hawk panel finished. That means 2/3 of the blanket is done. On to the wolf!

Wolf finnaly done! Started work on the last panel, the Owl. I had to stop for a while, but now I’m planning some knitting time each morning and in the evening. It would be great if I could manage 4 rows a day. This really has to be done by the end of June. Little M. will be already 5 months old.

I just have to keep the eyes on the prize: I’m at the last section of the owl panel. It’s almost done, sigh, at last!

Casting off and weaving in ends.
Next step: wash, block and sew the halves together. And take pictures. And brag about it. And vow never again to do such an enormous thing. Ever. Not even for my kid.

Ana and Tiago picked it up yesterday. They loved it, as I was expecting. Mission accomplished <3
