Notes

My husband’s beloved aunt has a “male friend” at age 87. I adore her, and she asked me to knit her friend a sweater, as she can’t do this kind of knitting any more.

  • my husband agreed to model, as otherwise I’m sure I’ll never get a modeled photo, but he insisted I crop his head off because his hair was wild today.

17.5 side, 10 armhole, 18 sleeve, 46 chest are the measurements from another sweater the BF has.

I cast on 104 stitches for the back. Too small, which I found out after our aunt brought a sweater from the BF to measure. I added cables up the sides.

Used Guido as a start, but changed the size (it was very wide but also too short), and the cable design, and did top-down sleeves.

Front: cables are 1 reverse stockinette on either side, 4-stitch cables, 2 stitches reverse stockinette then 2 6-stitch cables with 2 between. 28 stitches in total. This will be easy to split down the middle.

Count on 28 cables stitches = 20 stockinette stitches, so cast on 116 for front, for a little more ease.

After armhole decreases, knit 3 patterns then start v-neck. Decrease every 4th row starring row 1 pattern.

Sleeve
-pick up 88 stitches (every second stitch- twist). Knit 1 row then knit 59 wrap, purl 30 wrap. Wrap on nextstitch each row. When there is 17 left, skip a stitch between wraps.

  • decrease first row, one stitch away from marker.
  • decrease every 5th row 3 times to 80 stitches, then every 7th row after to 54 stitches. 21 rows 2x1 rib on 3.5 mm needles then bind off.

NOTES:
Requirements:

  • dark gray
  • larger cable
  • cables running from the shoulders to a V - recipient is ok with the cables running beside the v-neck - don’t have to move them to the shoulders.
  • size L.

My gauge with Vintage is 18/24 to 4 inches on a 4.5 mm needle, so using a 4.0 mm needles here to match the gauge better.

Guido: 137 stitches back, 146 front (for cable) - too wide.
According to gauge that is 24.5 inches wide after seaming.
Tire Trace: Gauge 16 st on 5 mm. Cast on 86/94 for each of front and back (38/42 inch chest). According to gauge the 86 cast on is 21 inches wide.
The Rower: Gauge is 21 stitches on 4 mm needle. After rib 236 st for M - 44.9 inches.
Use Tire Trace or The Rower pattern to make a larger cable and Tire Trace for the top- down sleeve instructions.

Tire Trace cables - 8 stitch-cables with 2 reverse stockinette between and outside. 22 stitches total. Add side cables - 12 more stitches (4 cables, 2 outsides) - 34 stitches. Split the middle 2 reverse stockinette stitches at neckline.

The Rower - 3 cables = 33 stitches. 2 large cables and 2 smaller (8) = 29 stitches

Research:
Pattern Possibilities:
link text - only 2 cables, starting mid-shoulder then converging. Drop shoulder. Nice fat cable.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ben - lighter yarn and smaller needles. Drop shoulder.

the rower - this is DK. Modify for worsted and do more plain stockinette. Nice fat cables pattern and nice neck. Raglan.

tire trace - 2 cables only on front. Converge. Nice fat cables. Bottom up with sleeves top-down. Make neck higher. Drop shoulder
