The first time I made this, it was very large here. Making one for kids now, so go down to 5.5 mm needle.

Grant (age 3) (shown on light globe)
Hat: Cast on 48. 4 rows white then knit red. Increase every 7. 55 stitches.
Start decreases per pattern at 6 inches from brim.
Decrease row then 3. Decreases same way until k2 Tog.

Beard: Cast on 25 not 27. Skipped first increase and 3rd. End row 6 with 3 rows of loops and 27 stitches.
Start short rows and follow pattern. 4 cast off for mouth.
- added 2 buttons to beard that can stick through hat.

Dominic (age 10)
Follow pattern with 5.5 mm needles except 7 inches until decreases start and more decrease rows.
