I’m making my fourth shawl based on an Erich Engeln doily pattern. I’m knitting seven out of the original eight repeats, much as usual. But this time there is a twist - the central repeat will be upsidedown. The shawl will be made in three sections, joined probably with grafting, and edges/borders added as seems appropriate when I get to that stage. The idea is to add length but not depth to the shawl.

18 July 2017. The first section of three repeats completed.

26 July 2017. Second section of three repeats completed.

31 July 2017. Last section, the odd one out, completed.

7 August 2017. Over the last week the sections have been joined and the complete outer edge has been knitted further to the B size of the pattern. I joined the sections by picking up stitches along the sides of the pieces and grafting them together (Kitchener Stitch). I’m now knitting the looped border using double yarnovers with eight stitches in each, in this manner.

10 August 2017. Loops finished. I now need to add an edging to the remaining unfinished edge. It will probably be a narrow band of five stitches of single rib. But that will have to wait until I come back from my holiday.

20 August 2017. Home again and knitting the rib border. Very slow work; I might be some time.

23 August 2017. Edge done. Ends woven in. Now blocking.
