Notes

After a few false starts with size I, J, then H hooks I went back to the I and figured out how to modify the pattern for worsted weight yarn. Need hook with no handle - Clover Amour was too annoying due to short neck. Switched to Boye.

Used mostly Red Heart Super Saver and cheap mystery acrylic. Think this would be a lot easier with yarn that’s less stiff like Caron Simply Soft (although it’s very splitty) or Berroco Comfort. (I’ve since done this pattern with Loops & Threads Impeccable and found it pretty comfortable to work with. Great color selection too. I’ve also done it with Caron One Pound which came out looking really beautiful but was so stiff to work with that it was very hard on my wrists. See here.)

Pattern changes for worsted
Rnds 1 & 3: Ch 3 instead of 5 for first tr of each cluster. Ch 4 instead of 5 after each cluster.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 instead of 2 before and after each tr shell.

Tips

  • First ch after corner cluster is made should be loose to accommodate 12 tr on next rnd.
  • Sl st loosely.
  • Always count shells (8 tr) & wheels (12 tr) before moving on. Double check at the end of the side.
  • Work rnd 1 of next color after one side of rnd 2 of previous color is complete. Helps catch counting mistakes sooner, so you only have to rip out one side rather than an entire rnd.
  • Use locking stitch markers to prevent unraveling when not working.
  • Sew ends in as you go.
  • Take frequent breaks and stretch.
