I wanted to make something special for a woman in California who has been sending me lovely hand sewn gifts for the last few years. I’ve never met Sharon, she is married to a man (Bob) on a Fishing forum my partner is involved in. Every Christmas for the last 3 years a parcel arrives and inside are hand sewn flannel pillow cases, or a quilted table runner and this year it was a delightful little Kleenex pouch made out of Japanese themed fabric. Honestly how kind and thoughtful is this.
So I wanted to make something special and hopefully give her the ‘feels’ she has given me. But what to knit for someone that lives in the sunshine. A shawl, of course, always shawls.
This pattern was so much fun to knit; enough challenge to keep up the interest but rhythmic enough to allow for copious Netflix binging. Perhaps the variegated colour way was not the best choice but this wool is so nice to work with I couldn’t resist. Actually the lace work does show up nicely.
I wanted to capture the feel of the ocean and send some Nova Scotian beauty to the Pacific coast. The day I took it off the wires we drove to one of my favourite places to take pictures and fill the fiber with some Atlantic air. The background is Wolf Gut on Bell Island. If you look closely you can see a little beach which can only be reached by boat. When I was a kid we had a cottage on Bell Island and my brother and I would row to this Island and feel like great adventurers. The pattern’s original name really captures the mood of this beautiful shawl.
