Notes

I’m a bit of a mishmash of sizes. For reference:
Bust - 38”
Waist - 35”
Hip - 40”
Hand circumference - 8”
Upper arm circumference - 14”
Arm (armpit to end of sleeve) length - 20”
Torso (armpit to hip) length - 18”
Armpit to yoke length - 8”
Yoke circumference - 25”

Took about 90 minutes to wind the whole thing. I wound it on the ball winder as far as I could, took the ball off and then wound by hand since it’s so large. In looking for somewhere to put it that wasn’t the ground, I decided to use a large salad bowl as a makeshift yarn bowl.

8/23 - First gauge swatch, with size 9 needles, was off by about an inch for both the stockinette and Artichoke pattern. I got about 8 stitches for 2” on the stockinette one and 8” for the Artichoke pattern. The second gauge swatch, with size 8 needles, was spot on for both.

What’s interesting is that the Ravelry pattern page lists the suggested needs as US 7 and US 8, whereas in the book, it’s US 8 and US 9. Of course, ultimately it just depends on one’s gauge, but anyway. Looks like I’ll be using the US 7 and US 8 sizes.

Lessons learned: do the sleeves first :D Otherwise, when you get to it, you’ll have to break your yarn and do the sleeves and then add them in later. I should have realized that after I read through the pattern, but I got kind of excited.

Sizing wise, there’s a lot of ease in this pattern so my mishmash of sizes didn’t really become an issue.

Notes on the yarn: Empire is very squishy and forgiving. My ball also had a lot of vegetable matter that I picked out from time to time. It washes up nicely, though. The other bonus is that you don’t have to worry when the pattern says to slip a stitch off the needle so you can knit it later…the yarn is thick and sturdy enough that you will have to work really hard to actually drop stitches.

Notes on the pattern: pretty easy to follow; definitely, DEFINITELY, mark up everything for your size early on. Mark the living daylights out of it. I did this sweater over the course of a year and was saved by taking copious notes. Thankfully, it is also easy to figure out where you are.

The shaping is a little off on mine as I somehow ended up with mismatched numbers of stitches on the arms where they attached. I’m not sure how that happened, but I winged it when I fixed it so if you look too closely, you’ll see some of the shoulder join seams slant harder than others. I don’t think it messes too much with the actual fit of the garment. It is still drying, but I’ll take an action shot later.
