Notes

I had to make this narwhal for Victoria Schwab, for her narwhal army. I think she will use it for good. At any rate, it will cheer her on as she writes and edits! V’s book, The Near Witch, will be released on August 2, 2011.

I needle-felted the eyes and knit the horn using Lark, the body was made with Paton’s in the darkest gray possible, to match an actual narwhal as closely as possible. Why a blue horn? I wanted that to match the cover of The Near Witch.

I had no trouble at all with the pattern. My only worry was the horn. I was concerned about the ridges having GIANT jogs, messing up the pretty. So I tried the same method as for jog-less stripes. In this instance, it worked much better than it ever does with stripes (for me, at least). It also gave a hint of a twist to the horn--and all narwhals have twisted horns!

Inside the horn is a skewer from one of those mini-cheeseburgers Chili’s has on their appetizer menu. I asked them for an extra when I saw how perfect the size was.
