Notes

My next pair of socks in the Hunger Games Tribute collection. They will be a three color sock inspired by Katniss’ alter ego--the Mockingjay.

Mosaic chevrons and birds for a sock inspired by Katniss Everdeen’s alter ego, “The Mockingjay.”

SPOILER ALERT FOR THE BOOKS-->The main inspiration was the last dress designed for her by Cinna, her stylist, in the second book. An confection of white pearls and silk, it transformed into a black and white mockingjay complete with wings!

2/17/12--Working on the foot charts. Trying to find ways to gracefully incorporate a bird motif into a chevron on a sock using mosaic stitch and three colors…this is proving to be an interesting challenge.

I have a preliminary chart that I worked out in Excel. I will have to look at it carefully and modify as needed.

2/18/12--going to Joanns today to get some swatching yarn. I want to have this pattern all figured out before I start working in the final yarn.

2/21/12--I just finished some sketches that has helped me figure out my heel transition. I want the pattern to wrap around the foot, but with a mosaic color work sock that is very difficult to do gracefully. I think with the heel I’ve figured out a way to do it. For a while I was convinced I’d have to do an afterthought heel…and while that is a good idea and would easily solve my dilemma, I really like the flap and turn heel. But I believe I’ve got it solved, and figured out a way to really integrate that third color into the design. :)

The yarn arrived this afternoon! Photo added to show the yarn.

2/23/12--The mockingjay mosaic is starting to look really really awesome. I just need to add a bit more to it, but then I’ll be ready to swatch it. I have settled on 74 sts and I’m not sure if there will be more than one size.

2/27/12--So far the chart for the foot has had 3 permutations, and I’m about to modify it again. 72 stitches. One size. Some intarsia for the heel detail along the back of the leg. I think I will release this pattern without testing it as a free pattern so that people can knit it up.

3/8/12--It took me a while to finally get some swatches knit, and then to finally cast on in the final yarn, but I’m now about 2 inches into the sock. I love Zebra Chevron, and I’m glad I was able to incorporate it into my wing design into the bird. I will post a picture later today, and add one to my blog as well.

This sock is almost the opposite of Peeta in style. Its bold colors, has a small, twisted rib cuff (only 1”) and will be a short, complex looking sock. I think it shows I really do design in quite a range.

3/11/12--Almost to the heel section on this first sock. My goodness! Still hoping to finish these before the end of the month.

3/14/12--Looking at this sock, I am seeing that it isn’t really long enough, sexy enough, dangerous enough to represent my concept properly.

So I’m going to add a bit more width to it, a lot more length to this sock. I think I will include both lengths as options. Some people prefer ankle socks…Personally I prefer my socks closer to knee length. The Mosaic stitch doesn’t have alot of give. I think I will have this in two widths and two lengths to give people options.

So this is on a brief hiatus. I need to rework the chart.

3/17/12--Frogging this original sock. I’ve already completed the cuff for the new sock, and I’ve finished the chart for the Med/Large size. I will begin working on it tonight.

3/21/12--Got the original past the cuff. This one is a hard one to work on when you are taking care of toddlers!

5/15/13--I can’t believe its been over a YEAR since I picked these up and worked on them.

Sad Sad socks.

Anyhoo, these are about to get a revival. I’m going to redo the charts for the two proposed sizes and get this sock baby on the road. Yup.

I just need to find all the yarn…and my original charts…and my needles. Sigh.

9/2/14--Starting over with new yarn. I hope to have updated photos soon.

9/3/14--New yarn arrived yesterday. Now I just need to figure out what in the name of mother hubbard I was thinking when I designed these charts because, great googly moogly they make NO sense 2 years later. Well at least I’m not starting all over from nothing. Sigh.

Tester errata:
Problems in charts have been corrected and update sent.

10/4/14: Front Leg Chart 1, Row 61, all sizes. St (4, 6, 8) should be a slip st.

10/10/14:
-1/2 RC should read 1 X 2 Right cross
-Front Leg Chart 2/Size M should read “all sizes”
-Back Leg Chart 2 row 15 st 13 SHOULD be black. Row 29 st 34 and Row 33 st 34 and 36 should all be slip sts.
-Front leg chart 2/All Sizes. Row 19 sts 22 and 23 should be black.
-At the end chart before the heel, work row 45/46 in reverse across the wrong side, working them as purl instead of knit sts and slwyif sts instead of sl sts. Does that make sense? You’re just repeating the row one more time across the WS.

10/12/14: updated charts were sent out.

Row 9, st 14 on the heel should be MC.
