I bought this Katia yarn when I was visiting my mother in Essex, really on the spur of the moment. It just caught my eye and I thought it would be great for this pattern - in fact, dark and tweedy like the pattern sample photos. I have a lot of time for Katia yarn and this Merino Tweed Socks is no exception: it’s velvety soft and slightly unevenly spun, which gives it a rustic look/handle; and you really wouldn’t know that it had 25% nylon content.

The pattern is wonderful: such a great shape and construction. It’s taking me a while to knit this: the cabling is quite dense (though not difficult)… and the sun is shining… and I’m busy painting… and gardening… and grandchild-sitting… and walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way (almost 90 miles in 7 days, ouch)… there are just not enough hours in the day!

Mods: I need to make the body a bit longer to fit me, so after about 5” from the armholes, I’m increasing on the fronts every 6th row. Hopefully this will make the fronts slightly less flared. Not quite sure how long to knit the body before the ribbing - perhaps an inch or two? Update: knitted the body to about 15.5” (rather than 14.5”). Bottom ribbing: I’ve adjusted the stitch count to ‘divisible by 4, plus 2’, so that I begin and end the row with k2.

Sleeves: knitting these inside out for ease. Have picked up 2 extra sts from underarm (thus 70 sts), decreasing 8 times in total to 54 sts. I’ve knitted the sleeves to 15.5” (I don’t want them as long as the pattern), then decreased 2 sts on the 1st row of the cuff ribbing (which I’ll knit to 4”).

Well, it seems to have taken an age to knit this, and of course, it’s absolutely boiling hot and definitely not cardigan weather! Still, it feels great on - a very versatile style.
