Notes

Gauge on pattern website says “13 hdc by 11 rows = 3” square” while gauge on Ravelry page for the pattern says “13 stitches and 11 rows = 4 inches in hdc” (both accessed May 10, 2015).

Correct gauge is presumably the 3” version, since there’s no way I could get 4” out of a size G hook. Needed an F to make 3” gauge.

Remember: with hdc, there’s an extra “loop” on the side facing you (looks like a slip stitch in the side) and you need to insert the hook above it.

Worked from top to bottom. Beginning chain is the top of the back yoke: you start by crocheting the back yoke from the top down to the lower edge of the armscye, then you go back to the other side of the foundation chain and crochet the left and right fronts from the top down to the lower edge of the armscye. On the last row of the second front half you keep on going at the end of the row, continuing that row across the back and onto the other front. Then it’s just back-and-forth across the whole thing, working from top to bottom.

Size XS has the right back width (14”) but armscye isn’t deep enough: extended it to 26 rows in the back, 26 rows in the front, but that wasn’t enough. Changed to 26 rows in the back, 28 in the front, and shaping the front 1.5 in. wider over the bust by increasing one stitch at the front edges on rows 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, & 27 (total: 26 stitches each side instead of 18) for a total of 112 across entire sweater for first ten rows from the lower edge of the armscye down; tried dropping one stitch either side for 8 rows to get back to 96 stitches, but the transition was too abrupt. Instead did hdc2tog on last two stitches of every other row for 16 rows.

Creating horizontal dart at waist by having six short rows (alternating sl st/sc) then four normal ones as last rows. Decreased with hdc2tog spaced out either side of center back instead of at front for rows 60 through 67 (switched to edging at row 67). Should have made more decreases in the lower back to narrow it below the shoulders.

2 hdc in each lower corner on 1st, 6th and 7th rounds of edging (but probably should have been every round).

Sleeves: sc all the way around for round one, then sc 10 stitches either side of underarm join (i.e. 20 sc) with hdc for the rest, for seven rounds (i.e. is 7 rounds, incl. the initial sc round, with underarm narrower than the “sleeve” part).
