Notes

05/12/2014 - I’ve been wanting to make these every since I’ve seen a picture. I’m stash busting, so these are going to be little anklets.

Named this after the song from Captain EO. The rainbow color reminds me of it ;)

Details on how I worked my socks:

Cast on 56 stitches.
Work K1, P1 for cuff. Mine are 8 rows.

I did four pattern repeats before starting the heel. I think if I make another pair of these, I will work 5 or 6, depending on how they feel when I wear them with shoes. After finishing one, four pattern repeats worked great.

I worked a Band Heel, modifying the instructions from here: http://webpages.charter.net/NanKnits/bandsock.htm

I separated the heel and body in half, so 28 for the body part of the sock, and 28 for the heel flap. Here is how I worked the heel:
Flap:
Row 1: S1, K to end
Row 2 S1, P to end
for 20 rows

Shaping:
Row 1: s1, k8, k2tog, k6, ssk, k9
Row 2, 4, 6, and 8: S1, P to end
Row 3: s1, K7, K2tog, k6, ssk, k8
Row 5: s1, K6, K2tog, k6, ssk, k7
Row 7: s1, k5, k2tog, k6, ssk, k6 (20 stitches)

Short row decreases:
Row 1: s1, k12, ssk, turn
(the rest is the same as the pattern at Nan’s)
Row 2: Slip 1, P6, P2tog, turn
Row 3: Slip 1, K6, SSK, turn
Repeat Row 2 and 3 until there are only 8 stitches remaining. Finish having worked a purl row.

After this point, I picked up and knit 14 stitches on each side for the gusset. I had to carry the rainbow yarn along the second side while picking up, but this is easier for me than weaving in more ends ;) I kept knitting in pattern, decreasing my gussets down to 14 stitches per needle. Ultimately, you want to be back to the 56 stitches you started with.

I knit the body of my foot for 37 rainbow stripes, or 74 rows total before starting the toe. I worked two rows in white before starting the decreases.

I decreased the standard way for the toe (decrease row, work a row straight) until I had 16 stitches left total.
