Zissou Hat! Use this cast on

Note for the future. With my loose knitting, these size 7 needles are bigger than I should use with this yarn. It did much better on 5s for my Frostline.

Tips for using this cast on with rib other than 1x1

After reading a lot of comments about this hat and doing the math, it seems like it runs big. I suspect that’s because the original is knit in cotton. Or maybe Finnish men have bigger heads?

My husbands hat measures 24.25” - or something close to that as he was an unwilling participant in being measured. Something about interfering with video games. Although I briefly contemplated several possibilities, I decided to go with the 120” women’s size.

My gauge with this yarn knit flat on size 6 needles is 4.75 st = 1” which gives me a hat that’s a bit over 25”. I’ll game this, and use size 7’s, which gives me a chance to try out the Darn Pretty short cables I recently received with my shorter Malachite needles.

I also did the decrease in a different way - i did a k2tog decrease on the last purl stitch/first knit stitch of a rib:

Knit/purl 24 sts in ribbed pattern, k2tog, place marker, * knit/purl 28 sts in ribbed pattern, k2tog, place marker (repeat twice from * ), K2, P2
Every round thereafter: knit/purl in pattern until 2 sts remain before each marker, k2tog, slip maker, continue in this way
Decrease until 20 sts remain, break yarn and thread through remaining sts, pull tight and weave in the yarn.
