A bit on yarn & hook:
I like to double or triple yarn and use a crochet hook much smaller than needed to get a nice tight fabric.
I used DK+Worsted held double throughout with a 5 mm hook.

Rough recipe on how to make your own:

  • measure the outer diameter of the largest part of pot (see note below)
  • crochet 6 sc in a ring using your favorite method (I like magic loop)
  • 2 sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
  • 2 sc into the first stitch of the previous round, 1 sc into the next stitch (repeat around) - 6 stitches increased
  • 2 sc into the first stitch of the previous round, then 1 sc into each of the next 2 stitches (repeat around) - 6 stitches increased
  • 2 sc into the first stitch, then 1 stitch into each of the next 3 stitches (repeat around) - 6 stitches increased

^ Continue this pattern - with every round, you work one more regular stitch between your increase stitches. You should be increasing by 6 stitches every round.

Do this until you have the same (or slightly larger) outer diameter as the base of the pot.

Once you have the disc, single crochet around all stitches, with no increases, through the back loop. This will give it a little lip so it stands better.

Keep single crocheting around all stitches, through both loops (as normal), until the basket reaches the height needed. Keep single crocheting around, doing nothing special for beginning of round.
Slip stitch when you read the approximate beginning of round.
Do one round of slip stitch + 1 slip to joint and fasten off.

That’s it!

Note on measuring:
You want to measure the widest part of the pot. If tapered down, measure the top diameter of the pot. If quite drastic, as are most nursery pots, you want to then get a base to put inside that matches that larger diameter so that the basket sits relatively straight.
