The Wisteria pattern is written unconventionally. There are charts but you need to check the chart key because the symbols used are not entirely conventional in US patterns, e.g. a short line for a sc, and a tall cross without a top bar for a dc. Also the charts only show one pattern repeat so it’s not always clear what happens between repeats because it’s not always the same as at the edges.

The 3ch at the beginning of a row count as a dc, so when the pattern says “3ch, dc into every stitch” you do not work into the first stitch. The abbreviation “POP” (short for “popcorn”) stands for what is usually called a cluster. An instruction to “skip 2ch, sc, 2ch” means to skip all those stitches, or in other words work into the centre of the next 5ch loop.

The written pattern implies that you are crocheting into chain stitches rather than into spaces, but other crocheters have said that they think this is unnecessary, so I’m working into the spaces.

I began with chainless foundation double crochet, because I don’t like beginning chains as they aren’t at all stretchy.

I missed out the last repeat of chart 2 because I wouldn’t have had enough wool.

I changed hook size from a 4mm to a 3.5mm because I was having trouble keeping my chains an even size with the larger hook. My work is still 22” wide so I don’t think that will cause a problem.

Following the pattern is hard, but the result is looking great. I’ve completed up to row 21, so from now on I should be repeating work I’ve already done until I get to the edging. It’s going to get easier from now on. I hope.

I’ve used 2.5 balls of wool out of 5, so I wanted to check how much I’d need for the border. I weighed my work, added a border to the start end, and weighed again. I will need 13g, so I’m going to allow 15g to be sure.

I’m glad I did a foundation row and not a chain to start otherwise I’d have a rigid bit in the middle of a stretchy bit.

And I’m done! It was just beginning to get a tiny bit boring when I finished. It’s a great pattern if you’re easily bored because there are so many different rows to it.

I’ve never used blocking wires before. I had no idea it was so slow.

And I’m done.

It’s OK. It hasn’t blocked as flat as I’d like, and the wool is a bit itchy. The wool bled a bit while washing too.
