update sept 17, 2011: for the border, i picked up stitched all around the inside edge. then i K2, YO all the way around once. then i K2, P1 (into YO) all the way around once. then i cast off VERY loosely (go up up up up a needle size). total weight of finished shrug: 62 grams.

made up “pattern” myself, inspired by http://www.ravelry.com/projects/ilukuduja/crystal-bolero and http://www.ravelry.com/projects/fasOLAAA/wedding-cristal-bolero and http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tribute

cast on 68 stitches, followed chart a for one complete repeat from http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tribute. then split the knitting and knit back and forth with a classic flat chart (found here) for frost-flowers to have a flat piece, then rejoined at second sleeve and knit in the round again. This still needs some sort of cute, but not too cute, border.
