knit in one piece, back and forth with a folded hem on the bottom. extremely inspired by http://www.ravelry.com/projects/fourchette/tempest-2 with a few little tweaks of my own.

cast on: figure eight on two circs, one smaller than main knitting size (2.5 instead of 2.75mm) for the folded over hem, and one smaller than that for holding live cast on stitches on the needle (2.25mm). did the math for a nice long sweater with my smaller needles + tighter gauge: cast on 252 stitches. (left front 65 stitches, back 122 stitches, right front 65 stitches.) knit 11 rows for the inside of the hem. now on WS, purl all stitches with main color (for me green), this is the setup for the folded over purl row. next, on RS, purl all stitches with main color. then, on WS, purl all stitches with main color.

Knit 3 big stripes (first has 13 stitches after purl bump of folded seam so that yarn is carried up the left side -- second and third stripes have 12 stitches).

Knit 2 extra medium stripes (8 stitches) to add length. Start decreases in first row of first medium stripe, on fronts 10 stitches from marker, on back 15 stitches from marker, total of 4 decrease stitches in that row.
