My first locker hooking project!

Started at Olds Fibre Week in July 2019, where I took a class from Kathy Schneider. Used alpaca roving (provided by Kathy) for all except:

  • the eyes/nostril (tripled Alafoss Lopi),
  • halter (doubled Alafoss Lopi & metal accents), and
  • edging (whip-stitched Lion Brand Thick & Quick).

The Thick and Quick doesn’t quite cover the edging completely but I tried another layer and didn’t like the way the edging got so noticeable that it took over.

I used an internet pixel art picture for the horse. If I did it again I would have the horse neck start right at the edge of the piece, rather than inside the frame rows.

Also doing pixel art like this with roving was tricky! Lots of big fat fluffy ends to try to weave in, especially around the ears, eyes, and nostrils. I think my next project will be a much simpler piece done in lovely straight rows.

Locker hooking is supposed to be pretty reversible. Due to the different weights of fibre that I used, getting used to the locker hook, and my awkward attempts to weave in all the ends, my back piece doesn’t look quite as nice as the front. But you get the idea!

Locker hooking is fun, fast, and easy. It’s a great way to use up difficult stash of roving, fabric or yarn and make them into a thick, durable rug or pad. The possibilities are endless.

I plan to do a rug for our awkward corner sink next, and then maybe some chair pads for the kitchen chairs, using up my stash of White Buffalo.
