Notes

I’ve modified the pattern slightly and to add a mitten shell on top to turn it into convertible mittens.

The yarn was only £5.10 each but I also bought some accessories: needles, cable stitch holder and then some seamstress needles which comes to £23.30. Plenty of yarn left, I’m going to use the rest to make him a necktie as well. :D

Techniques learned:

  • Picking up stitches
  • 3-Needles Bind Off
  • I-cord

To make shell:

Pick up 25 stitches across from the back of the hand. About thumb level where you’ve cast off. To do this, slip a DPN into the right loop of every stitch (as if to frog a row). Because your glove is knit in the round, it may look as if the sts you’ve picked up are not from the same row.

Row 1: K row. Cast on 15 to make it 40 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles – 10, 10, 20 sts on 3 needles.

Join and work pattern for 14 rows. Then start decreasing to shape the cap of the shell.

Row 15 (odd row): K1, ssk, continue pattern, K2tog, K2, ssk, continue pattern, K2tog, K1.

Row 16 (even row): Knit even with pattern.

Repeat these 2 rows 5 times.

Row 27: combine all remain sts to 2 needles then use the 3-needles method to cast off.

Use i-cord (2 sts) to make a little loop and stitch on to the top of the shell for the button. This is more an aesthetic addition because the shell do lie pretty flat on its own.
