I’m trying Estonian Lace for the first time as part of the Give Me A Crown podcast #firsttimeKAL

This has been the first time I’ve done a crochet cast on, and there will be a few more firsts as I progress.

I’m using the pattern from the Finnish translation of the Nancy Bush book “Knitting Lace of Estonia”.

13 August - I’m up to my third time casting on, and I’ve had to run to the yarn shop to pick up sharper metal needle tips. Hopefully third time’s lucky :)

21 August - I’m starting to ponder my choice of metal knitting needles because they’re very slippery and I’ve had a few close calls with dropped stitches. I’m moving the lifeline up after each repeat of the chart. Still a long way to go.

29 August - I was midway on the 12th repeat of the middle section when I realised I was running low on yarn (I’m using a 50g ball of one colour and a 50g ball of another colour for the border). I kept knitting, weighing, and realised I wouldn’t make it. Ripped back so I had 11 repeats and then finished off the middle panel with 1-2g to spare.

6 September - Finished! I had a little hiccup with the border dropping stitches but I managed to fix it enough so that it’s not noticeable.

Overall a lovely finished shawl!
