This is the second time I’ve knit Rogue, the first being an utter failure. The pattern is a bit challenging and there are a lot of mods required. I hate seams, so knit as seamless as I knew how. Here are my modifications (mods):
- Arms: knit circular rather than flat, cast on a few extra stitches so cuff would be wider. Decreased 2 stitches every 3 rows (at beg and end of row marker) instead of 4 increases every 6 because I didn’t like the hole the decreases made at the beg and end of the cable chart. This makes the inside measurement a bit shorter than the outside, but I personally like this because it highlights the cable while keeping the inside of the hem out of my way.
- Added length to arms (knit until measured 18” then started shaping decreases)
- Added several inches to body length (8 repeats of rows 33-38), and I’m only 5’2”! Plan to add 3” - 6” to torso.
- Added waist shaping.
- Skipped several of the first decreases on the hood to give more depth.
11/29/12 - Hood done! Woot! Knit as written the hood is too shallow at the base so I skipped a few decreases along cable edge then didn’t decrease enough quickly enough. Result - little pointy ears on the hood, but I turned inside out sewed done. I’m just ready for this to be done. this is Cascade 220, this is gonna be a knock-around. Ready to be done means not fiddling with figuring out how to do sleeves top down and cable chart upside down & backwards, but I will knit in round.
3/24/12 - Couldn’t find a good modification guide which would work with hood. So really nervous as i knit the the length of the armholes. I used my tape measure and stopped when I reached 9” of length (based on pattern graphic), which turned out to be 31 “additional rows” instead of the 36 written in the pattern. Since I shortened the back by 5 I decided to follow instructions for smaller size for the front since it starts on Row 5 of Chart B - conveniently taking care of 4 rows for me. (cross fingers)
2/6/12 - ended up doing a total of 8 repeats of rows 33-38. Now I have to start thinking about short rows for bust shaping… .
1/26/12 - Ready to split for front and back, armholes then hood. After trying it on don’t need short-row bust shaping, fits perfect. Not sure if I should try moding the pattern for one-piece all in the round or follow directions. …
12/15/11 - Knitting the 39 with a gauge of 4.75 st/in will yield 37” which is perfect since my bust measures 36” (1” positive ease is plenty).
12/12/11 - Going quick (that is in the half hour every 3 or 4 days I have time to knit, lol). Hum, pocket or no? I really need to decide (um, yesterday) which direction I’m going. I’m realizing I can’t just knit along and “see how it turns out” (rogue I FAIL taught me that). I need to commit to the svelte rogue ala selifx or the big and cozy rogue ala pieknits. Tonight leaning towards the svelte w/no pocket… which means I need to calc some waste shaping decreases and possibly some short rows for the bust.
12/6/11 - I started with this yarn in October of last year, but changed my mind. Tried to pick it up from where I left off but realized my gauge was lose (4.25), so frogged to the turning row.
Swatched with #8 square, 24 st in the round, coming out with a gauge of 4.75, which would mean 37” around hem and bust which is fine (I have a 38” bust and wanted to do some short rows anyway). I also tend towards loose knitting, so more than likely my gauge will end up 4.5. Gauge of rows is 7 per inch, vs pattern recommended 6. This is ok also, already planning to lengthen body and arms
Planned mods:
- Add 2-3” length to body(repeat rows 33-38 3x or 4x more)
- Pickup stitches and knit sleeves top-down in the round
- Add 1-2” inches to arms and bell them slightly (as in hourglass sweater)
