Completely made this up as I went. Feel free to use my notes below as a guide if you want to make something similar.

cast on 88 stitches.
for 2.5 inches: knit in seed stitch pattern for 43 stitches, purl 1, knit in seed stitch pattern for 43 stitches, purl 1.
knit 43, purl 1, knit 43, purl 1 for 3.75 inches - the purl stitches creates a fake seam along the two sides of the hat
0.5 inches straight stockinette
decrease row (knit 9, k2tog all the way around)
knit 7 rows (or, knit 1.25 inches)
decrease row (knit 8, k2tog all the way around)
knit 15 rows (or, knit 2.5 inches)
decrease row (knit 7, k2tog all the way around)
knit 15 rows
decrease row (knit 6, k2tog all the way around)
knit 7 rows
decrease row (knit 5, k2tog all the way around)
knit 7 rows
decrease row (knit 4, k2tog all the way around)
knit 7 rows
decrease row (knit 3, k2tog all the way around)
knit 7 rows
decrease row (knit 2, k2tog all the way around)
knit 7 rows
decrease row (knit 1, k2tog all the way around)
knit 3 rows
decrease row (k2tog all the way around)
knit 2 rows
pull yarn through remaining 8 stitches
weave in ends

embellishment:
two rows above the last purl stitch, pick up 3 stitches on either side, for a total of 6 picked up stitches
knit seed stitch for 7 rows
cast off
sew the sides into the hat, leaving the bottom side open
