Two cables diverged in a green sock
And sorry I could not knit both
And be one knitter, long I sat
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the gusset;

Then knit the other, just as fair
And having perhaps the better gauge,
Because it had negative ease and wanted wear;
Though as for that the foot there
Had worn them really about the same

And both in that obligatory nighttime photo equally lay
In yarn no cable needle had pulled back.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how sock leads on to sock,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two cables diverged in a sock and I—
I knit the one more increased by,
And that has made all the difference.
