Because I love the first so much!
In this project I had to search a lot for the proper size, because I used a much thinner yarn (sport yarn) than recommended and because I am a tight knitter! It is a lot of notes but I hope that my mishaps and calculations will be of help for other!
Needle 4.0mm: 21st/4 inches ie 5.25 st/inch
102 stitches at this gauge was really too big when I knit link text
With needles 3.5 I got 6st/inch
The fit with this CPH is close so with thinner yarn and thinner needles it should be closer even (too much).
Let’s make one size up.
Let’s knit the back with 102 stitches CO and see what happens.
25-12-2016
Monitoring the swatch: 11” wide now, but it’s in ribbing.
I have to knit a few rows in stockinette before being able to evaluate the width.
25-12-2016
32 rows for 4”.
15-01-2017
12” so far, must knit to 14.5” in size 44
18-01-2017
Decreases for the armholes done.
To avoid the mishaps (my deed by notswatching) of the first CPH,I will wash and block the back when finished to see if it stretches to the proper measurements. It is not awishful think only, it’s madeline tosh after all, and when I knitmy sailorsweater, with 102 stitches (and needles 4.0) it was a bit too large…
22-01-2017
Finished back.
Expected size: 18”, size obtained: 14” (dificult to measure because of the rolling.
Just dropped it into tepid water to see if it can stretch by 4”….
If not okay, I will see by how much I miss the size, frog and reknit…
24-01-2017
16” after drying. I may just frog the back and proceed in size 48” by casting on 110. At 6 st per inch it will add the missing inch….
06-02-2017
Reached the armhole decreases for the second time
13-02-2017
CO for the two fronts.
27-02-2017
Two fronts measure 12”
03-03-2017
BO for armholes done.
Shall knit to 7” before neck shaping, then 9” before shoulders. Almost there!
06-03-2017
Finshed the two fronts - knit together- yesterday, cast on sleeves.
09-03-2017
That’s why taking pictures of the WIPs is so good: because it reminds us that what we knit is pretty!!!!!
26-04-2017
Finally finished the ribbing of the sleeves after a long hibernation.
06-05-2017
Finished the sleeve increases. Took me approx 13 episodes of Prison Break. Very efficient. 15” now, still 5.5” to go.
08-05-2017
Finished the sleeves. 3 episodes prison break season 2.
22-05-2017
Started the hood yesterday, 7.5” this evening.
28-05-2017
I have to pick up the front edgings.
162 stitches in total.
I tried my calculations like in link text
This time it doesnt work, for each section I would have to pick up 10 stitches. The point is that each section is 30-ish stitches so I would have to pick up around 23 stitches which is too much.
Will follow this:link text
Gauge: 2” is 11 stitches, 18 rows so 4” is 22 stitches, 36 rows.
I have to pick up 22 stitches every 36 rows
22/36=11/18 (smallest possible fraction)=0.61
I have a problem with the way of adding fraction (no common denominator) so I do it the way I know to be sure not to ruin it
It gives me 3 stitches every five rows.
If I follow the method of the link: divide the numerator into 3 pieces: 4, 4 and 3 break down the denominator into 3 pieces: 6, 6 and 6
so the ratio is 4/6 (=2/3)+4/6(=2/3)+3/6(=1/2)
LEt’s try this and see if it ruffles.
Picked up 350 stitches, will have to knit for 0.5”
29-05-2017
I knit 0.75” of border. I-cord cast off needle 5.0mm
30-05-2017
Finished i-cord, now l need to buy and install a zipper, and knit an inside border to hide it. So far l have 2.7 skeins left and 1 skein from another dye lot.
10-06-2017
Sewed in the zipper.
Picked up stitches (“umbrellas”, no “smiles”) just above the ribbon of the zipper and knit 6 rows. Normal cast off (not stretchy) to give the whole some strenght.
