I am adapting the pattern -- pompoms (store-bought) rather than crocheting 70-odd balls, pipe cleaners for the candy canes, and red pony beads for the roof dots -- though the house, roof, windows, tree will still be crocheted. Am meh on gluing the bits on but am rubbish at sewing so whatever.
1/16 - front piece done, whee
2/23 - four pieces done. Roof next, and cardboard frame. Decorations and assembly later this year (like November)
3/3 Roof is done, snow trim half done. Yay progress. I feel a little ridiculous working on Christmasy stuff in March, but that’s really the way to get it done in time for next year. And hey, yarn doesn’t go bad!
3/3 redux - Roof entirely done, also icicles
12/17 - resumed! Is now assembled but not decorated. Skipped the “sew pieces together” part of the instruction (deliberately) and just glued into place.
Tips for the frame: a) instead of tracing pieces onto paper, measure the crocheted pieces with a ruler (to be fully precise one would measure each individual thing and then average out the relevant measurements) and then draw out a prototype with a ruler; b) use an x-acto knife rather than scissors; c) PAY ATTENTION to how it tells you to do the roof dammit, because “measure the roof piece itself” results in something that is not the right shape; and d) use clear tape (I stupidly used white and it shows through).
Granted, b and d fall under the general guideline of “read the described materials”, and a and c are just “follow the pattern” but.
(The gap along the corner in the picture will be hidden by the decorations, fwiw)
Oh, and tip that actually contradicts the directions: before assembly, make the icicle trim. After body is assembled but before the roof, glue icicles in place along body. Then do the roof. This will ensure that you can stretch the roof over the icicles yay.
I am going to vary the decorations a bit, in addition to what I described at top: the red roof beads will be in the hole of the shells, so more on the bottom of each row of snow than the top; the front will only have one peppermint in place of the pink candy, and the back will have stuff so it doesn’t look bare; sides may or may not have peppermints instead of windows, because I don’t trust myself to do straight lines.
12/21 - finished. well, except for the beads, but whatever, I am lazy and it is adorable :D
