Cast on 56. Knit ten or fifteen rows of k2p2 ribs (14 ribs). Knit a few rows stockinette while decreasing to 45. Knit rows 1-5 of Diamonds and Eyelets, then knit another fifteen rows, and then knit rows 15-19 of Diamonds and Eyelets, then a few more rows stockinette, then decrease to finish. Change colors as desired.

This was much less striking in person than in my hopes; probably a much smaller gray edge, and then not using purple at all, would have worked better.
