Usually I use the long-tail cast-on, but for this project that’s not possible because the ear flaps need to be knit in between casted on stitches. I used a backward loop cast-on instead. See a great video here.

To correct for the color-change jog, I used a method I found by the woman behind verypink.com. See the fancy video here.

I lined the 5” band and the earflaps on the inside with an anti-pill fleece to add more warmth and even more coziness. I added a homemade tag too from Aunt JoJo for more love. The best part is that I sized it so she can wear it for two winter seasons before passing it on to the next cousin. I can’t wait to get some pictures with my niece wearing it!
