Notes

The lovely photos of the Super Moon have been quite something to see. But I have been captivated in particular by the more mundane ones too, especially those taken at dawn or later when the moon shows up in daylight. Less dramatic, perhaps, but where there is more soft color. This one at the very bottom, for example, from Grand Junction, Michigan, is very much like where I live (though my terrain is more gently hilly).

The yarn’s muted colors remind me of the shorn fields on a clear November day. Add thoughts of a Super Moon Rise and you have something special!

I needed to play with this colorway before I decided how to proceed with the sock leg. Finally decided on this pattern--garter ridges suggest soft furrow lines in the shorn fields--simple texture to let the speckled yarn shine. Yes, believe it or not, I’ve decided to practice my top-down sock knitting.

  • German Twisted Cast-On: 70 sts with larger needle.
  • Shifted to smaller needle for remainder of sock.
  • 2” Flap with classic heel st
  • French Heel
  • Worked gusset decreases next to the heel sts rather than instep sts
  • Stockinette instep rather than ribbing. Garter ridges just above toe to echo the detail on the sock leg
  • Rounded toe from Socks for the Deputy Headmistress
