Notes

I started this pullover back in 2012. Originally, it was for my husband. However, he reminded me that he does not like to wear sweaters. Therefore, I put it away (half knitted) and basically forgot about it for 11 years. I finally came upon it by accident recently and decided to finish it for my (now) grown nephew or niece. This took forever to knit due to all the double moss stitch and cables.

The pattern instructions are bottom-up, knitted flat in pieces and then sewn together after blocking. These days, I never choose patterns like this. However, back in 2012, there were still lots of patterns with this kind of construction. And I still love the styling of this sweater. I was amused to read that even the neckband is knitted flat and then seamed with the left back raglan sections. Didn’t anyone know about circular knitting at Sirdar back then?

I chose to knit the body of the sweater in the round up to the underarms. There, I separated front from back and followed the pattern instructions up to the neck. Similarly, I knit the sleeves in the round up to the underarm. From that point, I knitted the sleeve to the top. Sleeves are later sewn in along the raglan lines. These were the only two seams, but I hated doing every mattress stitch. Note to self: Never chose another pattern like this again… It would be great if Sirdar would re-publish this design as a top-down, seamless pullover.

The pattern has a v-neck option as well.

This yarn comes in beautiful, heathered colors. Although it does not appear to be discontinued in the Ravelry database, I don’t see any stores or web sites selling it here in the USA. Deramores.com is no longer in existence, but you can still buy some colors of Sirdar “Click” yarn on eBay. A good substitute would be Sirdar’s “Country Style DK” which can still be purchased from some online yarn shops. The latter has 50% wool, so will cost a bit more.

Needles used:

Size 3 US - All twisted ribbing (bottom, sleeves and neckband)

Size 5 US - Body and sleeves (See notes below)

Size 1 US - Only used to bind off the neckband (standard bind off) which was knit in the round. Pattern calls for this to be knit flat and seamed which seems ridiculous today.

I couldn’t remember what size needles I used for the body, so when resuming work on this, I used size 6 US which is what is recommended in the pattern. After knitting a few inches up the back, I could see that my gauge was considerably looser than the rest of the body (knit 11 years previous). Therefore, I switched to a size 5 US when I resumed work on the upper front as well as for the sleeves. Knitting in the round often results in a tighter gauge than flat knitting. I used size 3 US needles for the ribbing on neck, sleeve cuffs and bottom edge.

After finishing the body, I noticed that I had one mis-crossed cable in the front. Although no one but me would notice it (most likely), it bothered me. The mistake was too far down to fix it by laddering down. Therefore, I used this easy method to fix the C4F mis-crossed cable. (6 minutes into the video). It looks perfect now.

Measurements before blocking:
Note: After soaking and throwing in the dryer, sweater only shrank about 1/2 inch in length and nothing in width.

Chest circumference - 45”

Hip circumference - 44” (just due to the ribbing pulling in a little)

Length at side from underarm - 18.75”

Length of sleeve from underarm - 18.75”

Armhole depth - 12” (seems a little too long for this size)

Widest part of sleeves - 18” circumference

Sleeve width just before ribbing - 9.5” circumference

Raglan seam (diagonal) at front - 13” (not including neckband)

Bottom and sleeve twisted ribbing - 1.5”

Neckband twisted ribbing - 1.25”

Cable panel - 4” wide x 3.75” high (single repeat of 24 rows)

Weight of finished garment: 17.3 oz

This is my very favorite tubular cast on (in the round) demonstrated by Suzanne Bryan. It’s super stretchy and very easy:
