Notes

Jennifer Wood has done it again with this gorgeous, seamless pullover. She’s a master with cables as you can see in this beautiful design. I love her ingenious construction methods and accurate, clear pattern instructions. Each project is fun and interesting from beginning to end. I learn something new every time I test for her.

This pullover is knitted with 2 strands held together. A single DK weight yarn may be used instead.

What I did differently:

  • I had to add to the neckline depth even though I matched row gauge. So I delayed joining the fronts, adding more rows while continuing increases.

  • With Jennifer’s permission, I made longer, fuller sleeves with a different cuff to match the border of the pullover. Here’s what I did for each sleeve:

Using the same size 3 US needle, I picked up 70 held sleeve stitches and 16 more under the arm = 86 sts to start.

On the next round, I decreased 4 sts under the arm = 82 sts. (K2tog & SSK)

On the next round, I decreased 2 sts under the arm = 80 sts.

(Knit 15 rounds straight stockinette, then increased 2 sts on next round - M1L & M1R.) Repeat this 7 more times = 96 sts

Knit another 15 rounds straight.

Next round: K2 tog all around = 48 sts

For the sleeve cuff, I followed the Border Chart (2 repeats around), but I didn’t do any increasing. For the Set-Up round, I just did 2 purl sts where there was an increase indicated in the chart (and beside it). In rounds 1 - 5 of the chart, I did purl sts in all the blanks or when an increase was indicated. On round 26, I did not do any decreasing because I wanted the ribbing to flare out a bit.

After completing the Border Chart, I did 9 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing.

I bound off with size 1.5 US needle (Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off).

  • I didn’t like the way the back neck rolled due to stockinette stitch. So I knit a separate strip of cables and tacked that onto the back neck using tapestry needle threaded with yarn. This not only solved the rolling problem, but also raised the neck up in back about an inch which looks nicer. Here’s how I did the back neckband:

Provisionally cast on 8 stitches using size 3 US needle.

Row 1 (RS): Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, 3/3 LC, K1

Rows 2, 4, 6 (WS): Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, P6, K1

Rows 3, 5 (RS): Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, K7

Repeat the above 6-row sequence 6 more times.

Then repeat the above 6-row sequence another 7 times, but using a 3/3 RC instead. So the cables start leaning the other way at the center back neck. I did it this way so that the left and right front cables would continue uninterrupted. There are a couple photos at left. There’s a provisional cast on at the beginning of the strip so that I could graft the back neckband to the left front cable neckband. The right neckband is also grafted to the other end of the strip at the shoulder.

What I’d do differently if I was to knit this again:

  • I followed the pattern directions exactly in the shoulder area, but the shoulders are too narrow for me. I should have delayed the “Shape Shoulder Cap” section. I’m pretending it’s a raglan sleeve design!

Pullover Measurements:

V-Neck Depth = 7”

Armhole Depth = 8”

Sleeves = 16.5” from underarm + 4.5” cuff = 21 inches total. (I have long arms, but you need extra length for some blousing with this style sleeve.)

Widest part of sleeve (circumference) = 15”

Underarm to bottom = 13”

V-Neck to bottom = 16”

I bound off the bottom ribbing normally using a size 1.5 US needle.
