Notes

So jazzed to be doing another test knit for the talented Tanis Lavallée. I bought her adult Camaro pattern which should work for Rylie’s sister, Abby who is 12 years old now. So eventually they’ll each have a Camaro. I want one too!

I did my usual Japanese short rows because I find them to be very easy and the most invisible. There are a lot of short rows in this design, but they are not hard at all. Short rows start at the sides and gradually go all the way to the center front.

I did the back neck opening with button because it will make it much easier for a 3-year-old to pull over their head. However, I did the edges a little differently. I think the following makes for a neater looking open edge. I did the edges of the split hem the same way:

  • Knit the last stitch of each row (even if it’s a purl row).

  • With yarn in FRONT, slip the first stitch of each row purlwise. Then bring the yarn to the back if you are knitting. The yarn will already be in front if you’re on a purl row.

I did not use a smaller needle for the split hem. I used the same needle size that I used for the body. Ribbing tends to pull in enough all by itself, and I wanted the ribbed band to hang straight. Bound off using Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off. Ditto for the sleeve cuff ribbing, although I did switch to one size smaller needles for the latter.

Rylie was not around for me to take body measurements. So I had to go by those recommended in the pattern. Rylie just turned 3 years old and the pattern is supposed to fit up to a 4-year-old. So I knew that 11-inch long sleeves (measured from the underarm) would be long on her right now. However, the cuffs can be turned back, allowing her to wear the pullover a year or more longer. I made the ribbed sleeve cuffs 1.5 inches long (10 rounds), maintaining the 11” total recommended sleeve length.

My finished pullover weighs 4.9 oz (139 grams) = 420 yards. So if you were to knit this in only one color, that’s how much yarn it actually takes. I estimated 20 yds for each CC, but that’s the amount needed for the longest stripe. The other stripes will take less than 20 yds.

This pullover turned out so cute. I know I’ll be knitting it again in various sizes.
