This is my first test for Daniela Mühlbauer of Germany. I knew I wanted to knit this the minute I saw the beautiful lace yoke.
There’s an option to knit the body straight or A-line. I made mine straight.
Daniela allowed me to knit fuller sleeves which I prefer. Following are my instructions on how I did my bishop sleeves. The lace before the ribbing increases chances of snagging, but it certainly looks pretty.
BISHOP SLEEVE INSTRUCTIONS
All increase rounds:
K1, LLI, knit to 2 sts before BOR, RLI, K1, slip BOR marker
With size 3 US needle, started out with 82 sts for each sleeve (size 3) after picking up sts under the arm.
K15 rounds. Knit increase round (84 sts)
K9 rounds. Knit increase round (88 sts)
Repeat above 10 rounds another 7 times (100 sts)
Note: If you opt for narrower sleeves ending with 90 sts instead of 100, you will not have to make alterations in Row 1 of Chart B as described below.
Now knit all rounds (1 - 72) of Chart B. However, since row 1 of Chart B is a multiple of 18 sts (rather than 20), I had to make a small change to the first row of the chart. Instead of “k2togtbl,” I did “sl 1 knitwise, k2tog, pass slipped st over.” And instead of “k2tog,” I did “k3tog”. All other sts/rows of the chart are as written.
After finishing Chart B, you will have 120 sts (or multiple of 24 sts). Now decrease in preparation for the sleeve ribbing:
K2tog all around (60 sts)
Knit one round.
(K2tog, K2) all around to last 4 sts, K2tog twice (44 sts)
Note that I have skinny wrists. You may need more stitches for the ribbing if you have larger bones.
Switch to size 1.5 US needle.
(K1, P1) all around.
Repeat until ribbing measures 3.5” wide or desired length. (My cuff was 26 rounds before bind-off.)
Bind off using JSSBO (Jeny’s Surprisingly stretchy bind off).
Needles Used:
Size 1 US - Bind off lower ribbing only (JSSBO)
Size 1.5 US - Lower ribbing and sleeve ribbing
Size 2 US - Neckband
Size 3 US - Body and sleeves
Weight of finished garment: 13.4 oz (380 grams)
Finished Measurements (after shrinking in a warm dryer)
These are length measurements, measured flat. Fabric does not shrink much (if anything) in width and less than regular cotton 8/4 in length due to the tighter twist of the mercerized cotton:
Side length from underarm - 15” (shrank 1”)
Lower ribbing - 3.375” (shrank .375”)
Armhole depth - 8” (approx., hard to measure)
Front & back length from center top of neck ribbing - 21.5” (shrank 1.5”)
Lace part of yoke - 7.5” (shrank .5”)
Below yoke at CF and CB - 14” (shrank 1”)
Sleeve length from underart - 19.5” (shrank .5”)
Sleeve ribbing - 3.25” (shrank .25”)
Narrowest part of sleeve - 13” (no shrinkage)
Widest part of sleeve - 16.5” (no shrinkage)
Lace on sleeve (Chart B) - 3.5” (shrank .25”)
This is my very favorite tubular cast on (in the round) demonstrated by Suzanne Bryan. It’s super stretchy and very easy. I used it for the neck cast-on.
