This is a fantastic pattern - it makes a fantastic hat! I think that I could have had this pattern finished in a day if I’d had the time and the drive. I decided to make this hat for my mother’s boyfriend, Larry. She’s been working on a scarf for him since forever and isn’t anywhere near close to finishing it…so I figured the poor man might need a hat to tide him over in the meantime. Plus, he’s terribly generous with gifts and presents, and I never feel like I’m doing enough for him in return. It’s one of those odd relationships, isn’t it, when your parents start dating new people? It isn’t about what’s appropriate and what isn’t, it’s about what’s comfortable and what isn’t. In any case, I like Larry a lot. He’s a sweet, kind man, very funny, and he makes my mother very happy. I don’t think I could ask for anything more.
I used this skein because Malabrigo is ridiculously soft and I know he’s a guy who likes soft comforting things. (He’s a cat man, after all.) I had been thinking of using the yarn for a blanket, but I’ve come to realize after seeing several people’s finished Mal projects that this yarn is terribly pill-y. I really can’t imagine anything I would ever want to make for myself with something that pills so much - I’ve discovered this year that I am really not a single-ply type of girl. But I think Larry will like this, and it will let me see how much it pills over time since I get to see him!
The name of the hat comes, of course, from the Friends episode “The One Where Ross Got High”, where in the midst of everyone spilling every secret they’ve had for the last few years, Phoebe announces, “I love Jacques Cousteau!”
