I’m really not understanding why people do colourwork mittens on such small needles. I mean, the yarn for this one is sportweight. The idea of doing that on size 0s or 1s makes my eye twitch.
I did the fold-over cuff on size 2s, and even then it was MASSIVE. I don’t like my mittens to be so loose that snow cold fall into them, so I ripped back and only cast on 56 stitches. Once I started the colourwork on size 3s, I bumped up to 59 stitches to make the stitch motif work.
The Blue Sky is SO SOFT. The Frog Tree is fine but nowhere near as lush as the Blue Sky is.
4/20 - I picked this up again earlier this week. I hadn’t come up with a name for it before but when I looked at it tonight, I suddenly had the song “Flowers On the Wall” pop into my head. I LOVED that song when I was younger, and it’s still great. These days, it reminds me of a friend I knew ages ago who would shut herself into her bedroom every day and try to count the flowers on her wallpaper. Every time she would lose track, she would have to start all over. As much as that thought depressed me, I always wondered if she had ever actually come up with the total - I love counting too…
Counting flowers on the wall,
That don’t bother me at all.
Playing Solitaire till dawn,
With a deck of fifty-one.
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.
Now, don’t tell me I’ve nothing to do.
Tonight I finished one mitten. It fits just perfectly and is SO thick and soft. However…I am not going to make it yardage wise, I just know it. I only have 18 grams of both blues left. I think I’m going to beg for scraps from people because seriously, I’ll only be a few yards short. No WAY am I buying a whole skein of yarn for a few yards.
Pretty soon, this will be another project I can mark off as DONE.
A BIG thank you to Verbena for the 4 grams of light aqua, amanda922 for the 5 grams of turquoise, mercourier for 6 grams of light aqua and 2 grams of turqouise, jrs for 2 grams of turquoise, nurselisa13 for 4 grams of turqouise, and the amazing davetony for his 38 grams of light aqua!
6/1 - Done! I could have completed these last night and had one more finished project for May, but I knew they would take a lot longer than I expected. So today I finished knitting the top of the mitten during a staff meeting and ice cream with Jenn, came home and fell asleep on the couch for hours, then stayed up to Kitchener the top of the mitten and do the thumb. The thumb has taken about 3 hours - no joke. I can’t believe such a tiny thing has taken anywhere near that long, but I had a few issues. I’ve decided I really don’t like afterthought thumbs, at least not on colourwork. They always look sloppy and just don’t match up with what the rest of the pattern is doing whatsoever. I’m going to write them out of my repertoire.
But these mittens are yum so soft and warm. I’m totally in love with them and now have something to look forward to in the winter.
