2/10 - This is a long overdue gift to my newest baby cousin, Kai. I meant to make it before he was born in October. Then I thought I had until December, when the sushi party usually is. But then, baby Kai was born early - in August, just like me and all the preemie babies in my family. (What is with that being the preemie month???) And he came with no blanket from me - which I feel bad about. Cute babies deserve cute things. Then I somehow kept putting it off and got on this finishing binge with my WIPs since I knew I wasn’t going to get to see him any time soon. But now that I’ve finally cleared away a bunch of WIPs and needed another knitting in the movie dark project, this one has come up!
It’s going swimmingly. I had really wanted to make it so that each wedge was a different colour - one blue, one yellow, one blue, one yellow, etc. But that’s not how this pattern works at all - I tried to make it happen that way, and two rows in, it was an epic fail. I know that there are short row blanket patterns that would allow me to do that, but I like the look and texture and flow of this one better.
I do have a confession though. I worked on it tonight when I went to see Shame - you know, the Michael Fassbender NC-17 fest, all about a sex addict. And now, the baby is filled with twisted family relationships, broken people, and unhappy sex juju. Which I feel kind of guilty about. Except it’s a fantastic movie (I actually stopped knitting at a few points because it’s just so engaging), and I was watching it for the second time, so I was prepared for the pain of it. But still…I’m really hoping this doesn’t make Kai grow up to have a kinky addiction. This will be our little secret, right Ravelry?
2/27 - I really did love working on this project - although I’m going to admit, by the end of it I was feeling some pain. Like, a lot in my left wrist. I get the feeling it’ll hurt for a few days at least. This was great yarn to work with, but I think the inflexible nature of it combined with the weight worked against me. Plus, that seed stitch ruffle? Oy god. I should have set it down part way through. Just doubling the stitches was a bear of a task. It took me hours to do that, I think. And to have nearly 900 stitches per round in seed stitch? That’s enough to break nearly any knitter. I doubled the stitches and did 6 rounds of the ruffle mostly during the Oscars, but I finally had to admit defeat for the night when I realized I still needed to bind off. I did a stretchy bind-off to give it room to breathe. I must say, it turned out really well.
Oh, and the cat sleeping on it? Apparently when I lay it out to dry, she decided it was her new bed…
