Main body of the sock is 3x1 rib. Black yarn used for heel and toe; it was a little sturdier, so I think it will hold up better.
The pockets on the socks are picked up and knit, and tacked on as they were knit. The big one has plain stockinette on the sock body behind it for strength. The compass strap was picked up and knit also.
The large pocket on the outside of the right sock contains a credit-card multitool and a key multitool. The small pocket on the outside of the left sock contains a Spyderco Bug knife, the smallest knife they make (good for defending against or skinning tiny bears). The compass strap is on the inside of the right sock, so that by crossing your left leg at the knee you can discreetly check your direction ;] All items are removable for washing.
This was my second pair of socks, and the amount of rework on these (especially picking up the stitches for the pockets) probably means that I knit two pairs of socks. But I’m almost entirely happy with them, and I think the recipient is entirely happy with them, and that’s what matters.
