I did not like the way the hair was done in the pattern (I also had a hard time getting it to look nice) so I came up with my own hair.
I just crocheted a length in chain stitches (a little longer than what you want the hair to be). Then 2 or 3 single crochets in each chain stitch on the return row. (It curls more with 3 sc). This makes a nice ringlet to sew on. Make as many as you need to cover the head
