Pattern for my alternate lace pattern III is at the bottom of this entry.
Cast on 3/14/15, 9:26.5 pm! I actually only decided a few hours beforehand that I absolutely had to do something to commemorate this special Pi Day, but fortunately I had some leftover Palette, and I’ll just do the shawl in stripes so I don’t have to worry about matching dyelots when I buy more.
Finished the whole center section (to right before the 144->288 st increase round) by the AM of 3/15/15, so now I have to stop until I can buy more yarn. Weighs 34g incl. needles.
I think I’ll pair this with Merlot Heather, and just do a two-color shawl. (Center section and 576-st section in Puma; 288-st section and border in Merlot.) Notes on amounts: this Palette shawl says “mostly full skeins used” and has a photo. This all-one-color Palette shawl used 7 skeins and this one used 5. So, maybe buy 2 more skeins Puma Heather, and 3 or 4 Merlot Heather depending on how wide a border I’m contemplating?
3/27/15 The additional yarn I ordered arrived, so I started back up with the increase to 288 sts. And the new skeins of Puma Heather are even the same dyelot as the first skein!
3/29/15 Joined 2nd skein of Merlot Heather on Round 32 of the 288-st section lace pattern.
3/30/15 Some people call it an error…I’m not sure whether it’s an error or just a matter of preference, but I decided to tink Round 41 (and Round 42 because I was almost done with that before I decided) and do the yo/k2tog one more st to the right so that it lines up with the top of the ^ in the same way that it did with the other similar patterns earlier.
Due to the tinking, I had an opportunity to measure the yarn…I’m using somewhat more than 6 yards per round at this point. (Not for much longer though…I suspect my progress is going to slow down a lot after the next increase round.)
3/30/15 Finished this section; weighs 102g incl. needles. Switched to Puma Heather on the 288->576 increase round.
I only put back the marker 5 sts instead of 6 before the 576-st diamonds because I liked how the yo’s lined up better that way. (Either that or my marker was totally off due to compensating for the possible rnd 39/41 error and this is actually the way it’s supposed to be. Not sure which.)
Modding 576-st section because I’m worried I’ll run out of this color of yarn (rough estimate is that I have enough for 36-37 rounds). Mods as follows: only worked 2 rounds between increase round and start of lace chart (in retrospect knowing how much yarn I have I would have done 1 more); recharted diamonds to take less space (see below); only worked 3 rounds after the last lace patt round.
3/31/15 Joined last skein of Puma Heather on Round 16 of the 576-st section lace pattern.
4/2/15 Finished Puma Heather section (weighs 195g incl. needles). Worked 1 round Merlot Heather (using the mostly-full partial skein). Cast on 16 sts (k1 st, slipped back to left needle, then cast on by backwards loop on the left needle so they would be in the proper location to start knitting without turning) and worked Double-Faggoted Edging (Barbara G. Walker, A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, p. 366). Edging modifications: last k st of each odd numbered row replaced with ssk; all [sl 1, k1, psso, k2] replaced with [sl 1, k1, ssk]; and obviously the 1st st on each even row is slipped wyif.
4/6/15 Joined 3rd skein of Merlot Heather on last row of 23rd rep of edging.
4/10/15 Joined last skein of Merlot Heather on 10th row of 62nd rep of edging.
4/11/15 Finished! Picked up sts onto the needle from the beginning by just sticking the needle through the cast on without joining any yarn, then grafted together. Now I just have to weave in tails and block!
4/27/15 Delayed a bit by catching a bad cold as soon as I finished filing my taxes, but I finally wove in all the tails (mostly skimming them with a sharp needle) and blocked this at my grandmother’s house.
