Notes

I have been working with Dr. Jullia Rosdahl at Duke in her study about how yarn art enriches the lives of low vision patients. We have had two freeform classes, and I’ve collected the pieces made by the participants, Dr. Rosdahl, and myself to assemble into a crocheted and knitted coral reef freeform display. This project was inspired by the travelling crocheted coral reef that I saw at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum.

Now that the classes are finished, I will be putting the pieces together and adding many more myself to create a piece of art commissioned by the Eye Center to be displayed at their Touchable Art Gallery.

Yarns (Cascade 220 and Malabrigo Worsted) and needles/hooks purchased at Cozy in Durham. Assorted scraps from my stash are added here and there for more variety.

5/6/13 Today my friend Ann Marie Casella of Ann Marie Print Art in Raleigh NC was kind enough to paint the canvas that the coral reef will stretch across. Now the white canvas will not show through the crochet stitches. It’s a lovely ocean blue. The coral reef is almost finished!

5/9/13 There may be a few touch ups, or one or two things added here or there, but the coral reef is essentially finished. woo hoo!

5/16/13 Officially finished! :)

6/28/13 This piece is currently on display at Duke’s Touchable Art Gallery at the Eye Center through August.
