i found the Northwest Beanie pattern she loved on etsy by Peony & Thyme.

we chose the yarn together at Michaels, she prefers washable (and softer for her) acrylic blends, and Chrisma Loop & Threads was perfect for her.

the cowl is my own pattern, knit in Lion Brand Ease in constellation

i made a 2nd hat for my trip to NYC in january 2017, with bulky wool sent from Sweden and hand dyed indigo Hinterland wool (a gift from Adrienne Shanti, @jai_jai_ma )
