I did not get gauge (mine was more like 6 st/inch and 8 rows/inch), so I modified the pattern as follows:
-only did 6 repeats of the band pattern
-picked up 133 stitches for crown
-decreased every 5 rounds 3x, then every 4 rounds 3x, then every 3 rounds once, then every other round twice, k1 round, then k2tog around twice

I like it without the brim, but I may add it in later! I kind of want to make the matching mittens now….
